When choosing a handgun, choose one either for the home or for concealed carry. Not many handguns will satisfy both requirements.
HANDGUNS FOR HOME PROTECTION (AND TARGET SHOOTING):
Should be a controllable size (big, but not too big for the hand) and be of somewhat “high-capacity”.Choose between a REVOLVER and a SEMI-AUTOMATIC.
REVOLVERS FOR HOME PROTECTION:
Ideal calibers are 38 Special (especially those capable of shooting “plus P” ammo) or .357 Magnum (which will shoot 38 Special (including “plus P”).
SEMI-AUTOMATICS FOR HOME PROTECTION:
Ideal calibers are 9MM, 40S&W, 45ACP in either a full size or a larger mid-size gun of high capacity (10 to 18 rounds).
HANDGUNS FOR CONCEALED CARRY:
Should be small and light weight but be powerful enough to do the job. They should be “comforting”, not “comfortable”. They will have a heavy recoil and not be a good target gun. Choose between a REVOLVER and a SEMI-AUTOMATIC. Choose a method of concealment: pocket or purse carry, inside-waistband holster, belt or paddle holster, various hip pouches, etc….
REVOLVERS FOR CONCEALED CARRY:
Ideal calibers are 38 Special (especially those capable of shooting “plus P” ammo) or .357 Magnum (which will shoot 38 special including “plus P”. They should have a 2 inch barrel and a 5 round capacity to minimize “cylinder bulge”.
SEMI-AUTOMATICS FOR CONCEALED CARRY:
Ideal calibers are 9MM, 40S&W, 45ACP, ( 380 is a borderline defense caliber) in a small, flat configuration with a short stock and preferably a single stack magazine.
